We are looking to appoint an experienced, proactive and efficient Clerk to the Governing Board to start as soon as possible. This is a key role providing administrative and procedural advice to the Governing Board, reporting to the Chair of Governors. We have recently undergone a full external review of the Governing body practises and now follow an annual planner which has streamlined all Clerk duties.
Contract – 16 hours paid per month term time only (43.1 weeks per year)
The school pays a fixed amount of 16 hours per month term time only but the hours the Clerk works are variable. Some months the Clerk may work less than 16 hours per month and other months more than 16 hours per month – it is expected that the hours the Clerk works will average out at 16 hours per month during the school year, and is tracked via a timesheet.
This vital position ensures the effectiveness of the Governing Board by meeting the administrative and procedural requirements and enabling the board to have successful discussions. It is essential that the post holder acts independently from the operational running of the school, and confidentiality of sensitive data is paramount.
Primarily the clerk is responsible for
- Administrative and organisational support including arranging and clerking meetings
- Preparing agendas in consultation with the Chair of Governors and Headteacher
- Giving guidance to ensure that the Governing body works in compliance with the appropriate legal and regulatory framework
- A commitment to providing the highest quality service
- Excellent communications, literacy and numeracy skills
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- Knowledge of schools and Governing bodies would be an advantage
The Clerk will need to become familiar with the DFE’s Governance Handbook, the DfE’s Clerking Competency Framework and provide accurate advice to Governors, as necessary.
There are typically three meetings of the full Governing Board per term and the rare occurrence of extraordinary full Governing Board Meetings and smaller working parties. Usually meetings take place in the evening with a start time between 6pm and 7pm and last on average two hours. A willingness and ability to attend all meetings is essential however, most of the administrative duties can be undertaken in the successful candidate’s own home. Currently meetings are virtual and we intend to explore hybrid options of virtual and in-person meetings.
We require someone with good listening/communication skills, together with an ability to successfully work independently and as part of a team. Good literacy, numeracy and IT skills are also essential. It is expected the successful applicant will work from home using their own computer.
The successful candidate will be expected to attend termly briefing sessions provided by the Local Authority which are held during the working day and take advantage of other training sessions offered.

Pre–employment medical check
You may be asked about your physical ability to perform the job during interview. As a condition of the Offer of Employment, the successful applicant will be asked to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire from which our Occupational Health Advisor will assess your medical suitability to do the job.
